"Organizing for the Future"

Organizing is humanity’s oldest technology, and perhaps, one that has advanced the least since the dawn of our civilization. As early as in the Roman Republic (509-264 BC), humans had started experimenting with new ways of organizing (new as compared to simply having a King on top of everyone else). Since then, technologies in numerous domains have progressed tremendously. Today we are masters of technologies such as space flights, nuclear power, and the internet. These technologies are so advanced that citizens of the Roman Republic could hardly dream of, yet our organizing technology has not progressed that much since their time. (In certain countries, arguably, it has even worsened!)
This panel brings together practitioners from organizations that represent the frontier of human organizing (i.e., the UN and decentralized autonomous organizations, DAOs) and scholars who systematically study different forms of organizing/decision-making. Why the UN and DAOs when we talk about the future of organizing? Although the UN seems ancient, it is the ultimate prototype of the governance model for the future. (For example, in the Star Trek universe, the United Federation of Planets was much inspired, and indeed directly modeled after the United Nations.) DAOs, on the other hand, are what we come to associate with the future of organizing.
The panel will be moderated by professor Vivianna Fang He from ESSEC Business School. Panelists include Katja Hemmerich, who has worked on a number of UN reform projects in different roles in the UN Secretariat, Sebastian Buergel who is the founder of HORP, a blockchain startup organized as a DAO), and Professor Jared Nai from Singapore Management University. Katja and Sebastian will introduce the governance model and decision making processes in their respective organizations. Jared will present the results of a series of experiments, showing the intriguing implications of authoritarian versus consensual decision making models on decision quality and collaboration.
Katja Hemmerich is currently the Chief of Training and Development in the UN Department of Safety and Security. Ms Hemmerich has worked with the United Nations for over 20 years, including Bangkok, Timor-Leste, Liberia and South Sudan. In her roles at the New York headquarters, she has led several organizational change initiatives in the area of peacekeeping training, staff mobility, performance management and workforce development for security personnel.
Sebastian Buergel builds technical solutions that empower the individual. As founder of the private data exchange infrastructure HOPR, he contributes to establishing full stack privacy for the web3. He also co-founded two other technology startups–Validity Lan (focusing on block-chain and other decentralized technologies) and SONECT (fintech). Sebastian Buergel holds a Ph.D degree in Biomedical Engineering from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich.
Jared Nai is an Assistant Professor of Organisational Behaviour and Human Resources (OBHR) at Lee Kong Chian School of Business in Singapore Management University (SMU). Prof. Nai’s research examines how social dynamics affect organizational decision making and employee outcomes.
Vivianna Fang He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Management, ESSEC Business School and senior research fellow at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. Prof He's Research aims at understanding collaboration in innovation-related contexts, with a focus on technology ventures and online communities.
